It seems the Today Show has finally found the best vacation spot...

Alter Your Agenda

If you’re planning on spending your vacation in San Diego this summer, or maybe you’re a local taking a few days off, think about heading to La Jolla Kayak during the week. Sea World, the Zoo and Legoland can always make adjustments for increased capacity on the weekend. Our weekend kayak tours and rentals are limited by lifeguard regulations. We want to make sure you can enjoy your kayak adventure just the way you want it. So if you have the option, come and see us Monday through Friday. We can get you into the boat and tour that you want with less waiting and more paddling. Isn’t that what we all want? And, even better, you can save up to 30% compared to weekend rates. Call 858-459-1114 or go online to make your reservations now.

Leopard Sharks are News

It was bound to happen sooner or later… Our local media has discovered Louie and her girlfriends. In case you missed it the San Diego Union Tribune ran a great article about our local celebrities last Saturday-check it out here. (Louie is the shark on the left.) If we haven’t convinced you yet-then this should. You have got to come down and check this out. Swimming with the Leopard Sharks is an extraordinary experience and there is no way to tell if they will continue to come back here year after year. We have three great ways to see the Leopard Sharks: the guided Leopard Shark Adventure Snorkel Tour, the Kayak and Snorkel combo tour and if you want you can rent snorkel gear from us and swim with the sharks on your own. Call us now at 858-459-1114 for more information and current snorkeling conditions.

Shark Daddy La Jolla Kayak

Great news, the guys with the big brains at Project Leopard Shark have caught up with Louie the Leopard Shark (literally) and it turns out that Louie is actually Louise. Technicians working for Scripps Institution of Oceanography captured “Louie” last Thursday in front of the Marine Room Restaurant on La Jolla Shores Beach. Louie was successfully fitted with an acoustic transmitter tag and an external identification tag and was released unharmed and in great condition. It turns out that Louie is a mature female Leopard Shark just under five feet long and get this-she may be pregnant. Researchers estimate that she will give birth to a litter of shark pups in the spring of 2010. They further informed us that all of the Leopard sharks that can be found swimming in the shallow waters near La Jolla Shores are females. There goes the idea that they are gathering there to mate. It’s more like an underwater version of the ladies shoe department at Nordstrom.

Jones-ing for a Picture on a Soda Bottle Label

Most of you have probably seen Jones Soda in your local market and maybe even tried one of their interesting flavors like FuFu Berry or Bubblegum. Jones Soda is also famous for releasing some envelope pushing special editions like Turkey Gravy and Corn on the Cob. Recently they announced a contest to find some suitable new photos for their equally unusual bottle labels. Of course here at La Jolla Kayak we think we have some pretty cool photos of our customers and staff so we submitted a few. We invite you to go to Jones Soda’s website, look up our photos and rate them. You’ll find our photos in the “travel” category. Who knows-maybe sometime in the future you’ll be able to buy a bottle of “Kayak Cola” with our signature cave shot on the label.

Adopt Your Local Shark

La Jolla Kayak has adopted one of the Leopard Sharks that make their home near La Jolla Shores. These sharks, that pose no threat to humans, have become quite a popular attraction for snorkelers and kayakers and now they have attracted the attention of serious researchers. That’s how La Jolla Kayak owner Michael Luscomb came to be a proud step-dad of one of these fascinating fish. As part of Scripps Institute of Oceanography’s comprehensive “Project Leopard Shark,” Michael adopted a shark and promptly named him Louie (although it may turn out to be a Louise). La Jolla Kayak's donation will outfit the shark with a transmitter and help Scripps researchers track its movements. Scripps is setting up a website so that we can all follow Louie and friends and learn more about one of La Jolla Shores’ most famous group of locals. We will post a link as soon as the website is ready. Researchers hope to find out why the sharks congregate in the warm, shallow waters between La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove. Are they mating, feeding or are they simply trying to warm up? Personally I think they just enjoy being local celebrities.
