La Jolla Kayak FAQs

1. What are your hours of operation?

We are open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day, year-round (and weather permitting).

2. Do I need to make a reservation?

Reservations are required for kayak tours only. They are not required for individual or double kayak rentals. But they are recommended, especially during the summer season. Click Here to Reserve Now

3. What kind of equipment do you rent?

We rent the following items for your ocean adventure:

• Boogie Boards
• Surf Boards
• Single or Double Kayaks
• Snorkel Equipment
• Wetsuits

A major credit card will be required as a deposit for all equipment rentals.

4. Will I see any marine life during my ocean adventure?

We will give you detailed instructions on the beaches of the area that are safe to kayak in and around. The La Jolla Cove is the best place to view marine life close up. Some of the marine life you might experience include: the Bottlenose Dolphin, Sea Lions, The Garibaldi (California’s official state marine fish), Leopard Sharks (no, they’re not dangerous), Bat Ray’s and a large assortment of seabirds that inhabit the La Jolla Underwater Reserve.

5. Do I need to take a lesson before going out on my own?

Almost anyone with reasonable physical skills can learn to kayak without taking a lesson. Before riding, all customers are given a mandatory, 5 minute safety briefing along with an overview of the areas in the water that are “Swim Only” zones. For those who aren’t comfortable going out on their own, we do offer guided tours led by experienced and certified kayak and snorkeling professionals.

6. Are lockers available to store my personal belongings while I am in the water?

Yes, we do have complimentary lockers available for your use while you are out on your ocean adventure. Changing areas are also available, but very limited. So we do encourage you to arrive in your swimming suit.

7. How old do I need to be to rent a kayak or other equipment?

Children six and under are not permitted to ride in our kayaks, even with an adult. Children between the ages of six and 15 may rent a double kayak with a responsible, accompanying adult. Those 16 years old and over may rent a single kayak. A major credit card will be required as a deposit for all equipment rentals.

8. What is your no-show policy?

• No-Show: 50% charge
• 24-Hour Cancellation: 100% refund
• Less than 24-Hour Cancellation: 50% charge
• Cancellation due to Inclement Weather: 100% refund
