Our fully guided tour puts you alongside the migration path of the gray whales. Only available December – February.
December through April, over 20,000 gray whales make a 10,000 mile round-trip journey from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California, where the females give birth to their calves. They typically spend several months in the warm Baja California waters to benefit the growth of their young and journey home up north in the spring. With 70 miles of coastline directly in the migration path, San Diego is the perfect destination to see the impressive parade of the gentle giants!
This tour keeps a respectable and safe distance from the migration path. No experience necessary!
Departs everyday starting at 9:00 AM (weather permitting)
Ages 6+ for tandem kayak (with adult), 15+ for single kayak
Weight restrictions 450 lbs. maximum for tandem kayaks and 275 lbs. maximum for singles
Total duration 90 min – 120 min give or take for the whole experience
What to expect on your Whale Watching Kayak Tour:
Your Whale Watching Kayak Tour will start off at the La Jolla Kayak shop where you will check-in with our front desk staff, and get fitted with your personal floatation device. You will then be introduced to your tour guide and group, and walk to La Jolla Shores together. Our beach staff will greet you and match you with your paddle. Your tour guide will do a 15-minute paddle instruction to prepare you for maneuvering in the ocean.
Entrance into the sea cave is dependent on weather and ocean conditions.
Please wear comfortable kayak gear, like a bathing suit or t-shirt and shorts.
Shoes are not required for the tour but please wear sandals or water shoes to walk to the beach.
Don’t forget your sunscreen!
We rent wetsuits.
